Drumroll please. ….Up for the first book review by an independent author book is. … “Ascension: The Rise Of Tyre” by Michael Gordon. Over the two million titles available on Kindle Unlimted, I chose a book that is completely out of my frequented normal genres. But this book wiggled out of the shelf and called my name.
The book didn’t disappoint and makes you stop and think, “Does this author know me, or is that just a coincidence?” This is the first novel in a series for Gordon and impresses readers with its inventive and fast-paced drama. I’m so glad I picked it up.
The book follows several characters, but the main story revolves around Tyre Ahab, an unparalleled leader with superb intellect. Interlaced with his rise to power are several characters and time periods that wrestle with today’s social, economic, medical, religious, and political issues, and how they manifest themselves in the future.
Selling one’s soul for selfish gains, and then reckoning with those choices is a classic theme throughout the book. “He wasn’t special at all, and the power and fame had become like battery acid to his soul”. Any reader can relate to several of the book’s characters, and then watch as their stories unveil through their tenuous life decisions.
After an exciting first chapter, the book keeps pace, bobbing between the present and future. Gordon uses inventive and creative ideas to view the present-day issues through a futuristic lens. Gordon unveils a reordering of the world throughout the book, based on today’s controversial issues.
Gordon really shines when he incorporates debate on religious, political, economic, and health issues in a variety of scenes. Gordon uses online videos, conference speeches, and media interviews to unveil characters and issues, keeping the dialogue relevant and attention-grabbing.
The most refreshing aspect of the book was the author’s use of multiple characters and settings. The book has so many scenes that connected with me on a deep level, that I’ll be anxious to see what characters and time settings the author chooses to use in the next book in the series. The book presents these thought-provoking characters and ethical issues, along with a few hair-raising scenes that will keep you reading more.
